Songwriting and performing - passion is not enough but it beats apathy

Written by Matt Moran on September 24, 2008 – 10:08 am -

My daughter recently passed this little ditty along to me.

The most important focus of the above post, for me, is the idea that there is still time to do "that thing."  Oh yeah, and the strawberry story.

Most of us have a "that thing" - for me it is writing - both books and songs.

A couple of years ago, I achieved a degree of success on the book side of things.  I have additional opportunities to achieve even more in this area - people I know, editors and publishers who like my writing.  Seriously, a little bit of focused attention and we will taste that sweetness again.

Now I have started having my music put in front of some people who, either directly or through another connection, can forward that side of my aspirations.

And the message that there is "still time" is a good one.  My natural inclination is to be a little bit impatient.  Why aren’t "they" on my schedule.  Or as I told my editor once, "I honestly believe that I am the only author you work with."

Certainly the only one that matters TO ME!

Passion is not enough - I have always had that.  Directed focus, work, practice, application, assessment, etc. - those are important.  Luck - it’s important - although we can guide luck a little bit.

But the real killer in achieving "that thing" is apathy…  Giving up on the dream - loss of passion - those are the killers.   Guard your heart against apathy because it will ensure you lose passion and "that thing" becomes such a hurtful thought, that you never attempt to achieve it.
