South To Mexico
Where did the song come from:
I was listening to Steve Earle’s song, A Week Of Living Dangerously - about a husband who takes a “wrong” turn after work and ends up in Mexico. Later, I was listening to a James Taylor CD and his song Mexico came on. I thought, “A lot of my favorite songwriters have Mexico songs, I’m going to write one.” It is cliche, maybe overdone - but, gosh darn if I don’t like the way it came out.
Verse 1:
Johnny & Patricia they’re good friends of mine
They called me up said, “boy, it must be time”
“We’re going to take you out – see you on your feet again”
They don’t know I’ve got a different plan
That’s the problem with this little town
Everybody knows when you are up or down
Need a change of venue, a change of scenery
A language barrier might be just the thing
(Chorus)
I’m smuggling my heart South to Mexico
A little border town where I can just lay low
Cuz’ I hear they treat heartache with tequila
And Loneliness by dancing with those pretty senoritas
A dark cantina with no one I know
Soft desert winds to warm my soul
I’m.. Smuggling my heart South to Mexico
Verse 2:
Mariachis play a sad love song
Don’t understand a word but I still sing along
Between the locals and ex-patriats
I find a place to put my love to rest
Verse 3
Que Bonita, Quieres Baillar? (so beautiful, Would you like to dance?)
We’re the last two sitting at this lonely bar
My broken Spanish makes you laugh I see
Does your pretty smile mean there’s a chance for me?
(Chorus)
I’m smuggling my heart South to Mexico
This little border town it lets me just lay low
And I’m treating my heartache with tequila
And my loneliness by dancing with this pretty senorita
A dark cantina with no one I know
Her soft brown skin, it warms my soul
I’m.. Smuggling my heart South to Mexico
