The Studio, The Stage, and Elsewhere

August 1, 2011 in Music

An update for August 1, 2011

MattMoran-blissI used to hate recording. The truth is I find it tedious although it has become more pleasurable. First, having the guys at Easy Street Studio in Simi Valley, CA handle all the technical details is nice.

But anyway you cut it, the studio is NOT the stage. The stage provides immediate gratification. It also allows for “stylistic flexibility” – aka: mistakes. They are there and then gone – you move on, you perform, no one is any wiser. It is energy.

Behind the Song: American Dream by Matthew Moran

May 23, 2010 in Music, songwriting

American Dream lyrics and music by Songwriter Matt Moran “From East Coast to West, through the soul of the heartland, though I’m in pursuit I know it’s chasing me.”
I wrote the first verse of this song (not the above verse) sometime in 2002 or 2003. The verse would pop up in my head from time to time with a nagging, “you oughtta work on this.”

Songwriter: Story Behind the Song – Decision Road

February 17, 2010 in Music, songwriting

Everyone doubts themselves! Universally, songs about facing self-doubt resonate with people because people, in their souls, carry deep doubts about who they are and what they’ve done; how they’ve lived their lives.

That is where Decision Road came from.

I’m forming a band – San Fernando Valley

October 12, 2009 in Music, songwriting

Over the past few years I’ve had the pleasure of playing my songs with 1 or 2 accompanists and with bands. It has been both enjoyable and frustrating.

The frustration is that I am typically giving a house band a hand-written chord chart or simply a key. You learn a lot about house bands at that point – sometimes we sounded great – like we had rehearsed. Other times.. well.. not so much so.

I am now formalizing a band project for some recording and future gigging. Details can be found here. If you know of players who might be interested, point them here.

Song Title vs Song Title – The Battle is On

October 8, 2009 in Music, songwriting

It started as “Where I Belong” – a song about climbing out of the often sticky morass that is life. Debi Brady suggested “everyday lies” – another song from the new CD project.

And so, when there is a disagreement, you take it public.

Help me name the new CD project. You can hear demo’s of the respective songs – Where I Belong & Everyday Lies – right here. Plus

Hello all…

I am in the process of re-building my website. The goal is to make it simpler to navigate and quite frankly, less schizophrenic.

Look for an announcement soon in relation to the new CD project..
